WHAT ARE SASH WINDOWS?

A sash window or hung sash window is made of one or more movable panels, or "sashes", that form a frame to hold panes of glass, which are often separated from other panes by glazing bars, also known as muntins in the US.

A sash window may have rope on either side or a spiral balance. When a window no longer stays up, or when it falls down, this is an indication that the sash needs to be replaced. Replacing the sashes in a timely manner can prevent the window from smashing down and the glass breaking.

There are many different size spiral balances. The size used will depend on the size and weight of the window. It is very important for the size of the spiral balance to be correct for each window. It is also vital that the tension in the spirals is correct for the size and weight of the window. If the size and tension is not the correct size the window will not operate as it should.
